Iconic British Cars - their history
As an Englishman born and bred and a fan of iconic British cars I thought it may be interesting to compile a list of the most popular British car icons that are instantly recognized around the world. I decided to draw the list of cars and car descriptions on the emblematic may be of interest to the reader.
Ghost Rolls Royce Silver
Rolls Royce and were in fact people before the history of Rolls-Royce as a company it started. Frederick Royce is an electrical equipment British manufacturer who built the first cars Royce in 1904. The three two-cylinder, 10 HP cars, he built drew the attention of Charles Rolls, a car enthusiast for a long time back in 1894 and son of a baron. He owned a dealership in London, where he met a Royce. He was so taken in engineering it in partnership with the creator of the car. Royce would build cars and Rolls would sell them. Like many manufacturers of the day Rolls came the first Rolls-Royce in races to promote them. These cars were similar to the first built by Royce. real celebrity came in 1907 with the introduction of a 6-cylinder engine inside a frame painted silver four-seater named "The Silver Ghost. This car has been driven 15.000 miles with little wear continues, cementing the reputation of reliability RR. Unfortunately, the passion Rolls "The excitement ended in 1910, when his biplane (based on the Wright brothers' flyer) crashed and killed almost instantly.
The Silver Ghost chassis, built in Derby, United Kingdom, has been tempered with a weave so that it could serve as a vehicle for fighting in Flanders, Africa, Egypt, and with Lawrence of Arabia during the First World War. In the Jazz Age that came after the war, people had money to spend on these rolls reliable. It was built Silver Ghosts in Springfield, Massachusetts, from 1920-1924, and a smaller 20-hp "Baby Roller" was introduced. Big cars were still popular, but with the Phantoms I, II and II, all appearing in the 1920s. During the Second World War, the company builds aircraft engines Rolls-Royce Merlin in a facility in Crewe, United Kingdom, rather than cars.
Mini Austin (1959)
Announced in 1959, and built 40 years later at the end of the century, Alec Issigonis was cheeky little Mini-Minor change the face of the automobile. first car in the world to combine front-wheel drive and a transversely mounted engine in a small package of ten feet long, was use the most efficient and effective road space that has ever been seen. In many respects, this should be considered in Car century.
In plots of the car Issigonis and his team, who had already designed the Morris Minor, gave a brief challenging the British Motor Corporation. After the Suez crisis, and threatened rationing of gasoline in the world, Issigonis was invited to provide a minimum size, minimum-price package of four places - all built around an existing BMC engine. A first-wheel drive and engine series A, then minimized the size of the car by turning the engine on the side, and the transmission mounted in the engine. Tiny (10 in. / 254 mm) diameter wheel independent suspension by rubber cone springs, and a careful packaging of the carrier, all combined to give one of the most amazing little cars of all time. So what if the driving position was cramped, and the steering wheel too vertical? This was a Mini, after all.
Although Issigonis was insisted he was only providing a super-small room, a super-economy, almost by chance his Mini was handling, precise racing car type of management and outstanding agility.
Even before the more powerful versions are available, the Mini has started to win rallies, and show and in the lounge car racing: the latest in Mini Cooper S form, height-for-height, he was unbeatable. Sold originally only two rooms door virtually identical "Austin" and "forms of Morris, Minister soon gave rise to derivatives. Not only does he have vans, station wagons and pick-ups plushes but Riley and Wolseley types followed, and the Stark topless Mini Moke machines.
Engines have finally been expanded, tiny brakes Front disc-wheels were added, the Mini Cooper and Mini Cooper S followed, and by the mid-1960s he was a car that had won the Rally of Monte Carlo several times. For years, there was nothing of a Mini could not do because it appeals to everyone, and all social classes, from royalty to the garbage collector, bought one. At the top, the production in two plants (Longbridge and Cowley) exceeded 300,000 each year, only problem being that the BMC has been set so quickly that profit margins were minimal.
Even the arrival of more underground Mini in 1980 could not kill the Mini, whose charm is unique. In the 1980s, with larger wheels, retrofitted interiors and window crank, the Mini is a better car than ever, and looking much the same, it was still selling steadily in the late 1990s: more than five million dollars had already been made. Now, in the 2000s, we the new mini, taller and heavier than before.
The Morgan (1946) 4 X 4
Although the original four-wheeler Morgan has been shown in the mid-1930s, it was overshadowed by the models of society with three wheels, more to the end of the Second World War. From this point, while modifying the original style only slightly over the years by Morgan focused on their sports cars to four wheels.
Morgans were first made by a family business in 1910 (a situation that has never changed), and even cars first used a type of sliding pillar front suspension independent is still used today. Assembly was still in his hand, always at a leisurely pace, and even in the postwar years, he has been a good week that saw more than ten cars to finish off the doors of Malvern Link.
The post-war four quarters kept the simple ladder-style chassis and suspension as hard as rock for which the mark is to be noted, and still looking Like its predecessor, 1939. He used to say that the journey was so hard that if you ran over a penny on the road, an experienced driver would know if "heads" or "tail" was the highest. Although pre-war cars were powered by Coventry-Climax the chassis after the war was only equipped with a OHV specially built Standard 1267 cc (which is never appeared in both standard or Triumph). Although this engine produced 40 hp, the Morgan was such a light car that could reach 75 mph / H, when handling a way that makes all the owners of MG Midget jealous.
The style is what we now call "traditional Morgan - it was a low-seater with two wings before scanning, and the spotlight on foot, with doors and cut the kind of protection against the weather who made a quick drive home in a shower, rather than stop struggling with his sticks and removable panels. Up front, it There was a near vertical radiator, headlamps flanked on foot, while the coil spring / vertical pillar front suspension has been easily visible the nose. Most were 4/4s convertible two-seater, more completely trimmed and equipped two-seater drop-head coupe (with the wind in the windows the doors) is also available. Bodies were supervised by members unprotected wood, steel or panels aluminum skin turns up, and were all manufactured in the factory Morgan.
Here was an old style, without compromise Car Sports is in modern times - a philosophy that has never abandoned Morgan. The demands of a modern specification have been politely ignored, waiting lists have increased, and Morgan was in good financial health since. Before the four quarters has been replaced by the highest total 2.1 liter, four more in 1950, a total of 1,720 have been sold 4/4s.
Hand assembled, these low profile two-seater sports car had doors and a heater almost vertical cross section which was flanked by headlamp up. Most were open and had exceeded the suspension rock hard.
Aston Martin DB5 (1963)
Fame is a strange and unexpected. Although the Aston DB5 DB4 and models have already been observed by the experts, the DB5 not become famous until used as transport of persons by James Bond in Goldfinger. Although not equipped with seats ejection Bond, he appealed to millions, and the reputation of the DB5 has been secured forever. Technically, of course, Aston Martin has always was a mark of distinction.
After the success of the DB2, DB2 / 4 Mk III and DB models of the 1950s, Aston Martin has commissioned an entirely new and large series for 1960, starting with the DB4 in 1958. Built around a single chassis platform steel, he was wearing a fastback lightweight alloy body by Touring Superleggera style elegance of Italy (but built in Newport Pagnell). The cladding panels have been attached to a network of tubes of light, a process patented by Superleggera. Power (and what power!) Came from a beautiful new dual-cam 3.7-liter six-cylinder engine, which soon proved to be solid and reliable race car. The DB4 has come close to matching achieved so far by any Ferrari. All this, combined with a matching cab with four seats, and high (traditional British) the standards of assessment and equipment, made the DB4 expensive highly desirable.
The DB5, which was launched in 1963, is an evolution direct DB4, she had a full 4-liter engine, a more rounded nose with recessed spotlights, and the improvement of many facilities. Two varieties engine - the most powerful with a purported 314 hp - have been proposed, as well as non-sporting options such as automatic transmission, which is came a decade before Ferrari stooped to such action.
It was such a complex, mostly handmade, the machine that had to sell at high prices. The square of an eye watering cost £ 4,175 in 1963 (there was also a convertible version at £ 4490) and because the meeting was a lengthy and thorough, sales were limited to just ten cars per week. It has not been For years, moreover, it became clear that even these prices do not cover costs for Aston Martin was just the toy industry its owner, the tractor magnate David Brown.
DB5s could safely reach 140 km / h, with better handling, steering and brakes to match, all notes of time to produce exhaust gas characteristic booming for which they became famous. Even if they looked sinuous and elegant, they were heavy machinery and there was no power steering on this model.
Obviously, it was a machine to measure GT would be run and as the longest and most spacious DB6 which took over in 1965 would be the proof. In just two years, a total 1,063 cars (123 convertibles, and 12 of them very special type break) were produced. Nearly all have survived.
The DB5 is famous car as James Bond in Goldfinger. Without ejector seat, the vehicle mainly handmade appealed to millions. Although was a heavy car to drive because he had no steering, the DB5 was handling good.
Jaguar Type E (1961)
In almost all calculations, Jaguar E-type of origin was the sexiest car engine ever launched. It seemed wonderful, it is extremely fast, and it has always been sold at very attractive prices. For over a decade, he was the sports car by which all supercar manufacturers other had to be measured.
Originally conceived in 1956 as a successor to the sports car racing type D, the E-type should not be used for this purpose. Re-engineering and re-developed, it became a vehicle on the road during the sport, taking over the last XK cars - the XK150 - in 1961. As the D-type, its structure has recognized all the best principles of contemporary aerospace, using a front multi-tubular chassis surrounding the motor and supported the front suspension and steering, and was bolted to the center barrier pressed steel monocoque and rear.
Power came from the latest version of the famous Twin Cam XK six-cylinder engine with three SU carburetors and no less than 265 hp (according to estimates American SAE). It was offset by all independent suspension, disc brakes all four wheels, and a unique style, the wind-cheating body. As for C and racing cars of type D, the shape of the E-type had been designed by industry expert Malcolm Sayer former aircraft, which combined great artistic sensibility to a line with the possibility to calculate the wind flow over the contours of a car. For practical reasons, the nose of the E-type might have be too long, its cramped cabin, and its tail too high to hide all chassis components, but all was forgiven by its aerodynamic performance remarkable - and its enormous visual appeal.
Open Fastback and seaters were available from the beginning, and even if a higher speed was 150 mph difficult for an ordinary private owner to achieve, it was a supercar in every respect, be faster than any other road car from the British period (And, indeed, for many years to come). Much changed types finally won a series of racing worldwide just below, because they were really too heavy for this purpose. Only three years after its launch, a 4.2-liter engine, combined with a gearbox synchronized news has been adopted and a longer wheelbase 2 +2 coupe followed in 1966.
The E-type are well sold around the world, especially United States although the new security laws caused the car to lose its advantage the power, and his headlamp covers before the end of 1960. Performance Series II does not correspond to that of the original, and in 1971, the Type E is a car a little emasculated. A final set of type III was powered by 5.3 liter Jaguar V12 new engine and a top speed of 150 mph was once more within our reach.
Drivers do not seem the spirit of the little cabin ventilation and less perfect, but in the end it was more safety regulations and changes in fashion that has caused This automotive icon wonderful blur. The last of 72,520 E-types was built in 1975, when he was replaced by another type Jaguar Sports, the largest, heaviest and not so beautiful XJ-S.
Regarded as the sexiest car ever launched, the Type E was a fast and outstanding sports car. Designed by a specialist in the former plane, she had an outstanding aerodynamic performance.
Land Rover 1948
Here is a classic example of the proposed stop-gap which soon outgrew its parent. Before the Land Rover appeared, Rover had been the construction of a number relatively small fine of middle class cars. In the 1950s they were building more Land Rover 4x4s and the cars were Very little of the enterprise.
Immediately after the war, Rover was running a massive shadow factory Alumni "complex in Solihull, and necessary for completion. (Shadow Factory "A" was an aircraft engine factory set up during reset 1930.) Facing a shortage of materials, he could not build many cars, and elected to fill the gaps with a 4x4 newly developed, which it would base shamelessly on the design of the legendary Jeep U.S..
In the early Land Rover shared the same 80 / 2032 mm wheelbase as the jeep, and the same basic structure of four-wheel drive. The Land Rover, however, is much more versatile than the Jeep, in that it was built in a myriad different forms, shapes and derivatives, and used body panels aluminum, which has ensured that it was virtually rust free. Besides the fact that it was not very fast or powerful, (if time and development would solve these problems), the Land Rover can handle almost any job, climb almost any slope, and Ford almost all rivers, which is invaluable for farmers, contractors, surveyors, explorers, armies, public utilities - in fact almost everyone with a need for four-wheel drive, and rugged construction that went with it.
It was not long before the original pick-up has been joined by vans, station wagons, short and long wheelbases to choose from, motor gasoline and diesel. A long list of extras became available: winches, wheels and extra wide tires, and liaison with specialist firms to ensure that it could be transformed into a railway vehicle maneuvering impromptu truck mobile cinema, a freight elevator equipment, and a whole lot more. His short-travel suspension blades gave him an overwhelming turn hard and engineers Land Rover said that, at least, limit the speed of cross-country to maintain the chassis in one piece.
Later models grew, longer and more powerful, but it is not until the 1960s that the first six-cylinder type appeared only in 1979 that the first V8 Land Rover was sold, and it is only the beginning of the 1980s that the suspension coil spring finally took over. Sales, however, has spent so on, with the millionth produced in the mid-1970s. In the late 1990s, when the Freelander 'model appears, 1500000 Land Rover was built, although by then it had been renamed "Defender" and
Bentley Continental R-Type 1952
After Rolls-Royce took over Bentley in 1931, he was more than 20 years before the owners of new products from another model really new sport. But the wait was worth it. The R-Type Continental 1952-55 was a very good car standards, which not only looked sensational but was also extremely fast.
Even before 1939, Rolls-Royce had dabbled with the prototypes of super-simple (one of them being called a "Bentley Corniche"), but production cars had to wait until the end of the war. Using only slightly versions amended the existing chassis Bentley Mk VI saloon, but with a beautifully detailed two-door coupe with four seats designed by coachbuilder HJ Mulliner, The company produced a very fast (115 mph), exclusive and very expensive car, the title says its own history.
The Continental certainly has no gain in performance by the light of being, but by a combination of high (unspecified) of power and the remarkable aerodynamic performance the bulky, but smooth shell. There was, of course, no way to tame the trail of the radiator grille Bentley proud, but the lines of the rest the car were the wind-cheating possible, the long tail is a delight for the eyes. Like all the best Bentleys in 1930, it had two passenger doors and a set full four-seater. Leather, carpets and wood abounded - no concessions have been made to ensure high performance.
Here was a grand tourer for expensive connoisseurs and, by definition, it is likely to sell in small quantities. Put on sale in 1952 to £ 7608 (at a time when Morris Minor price, for example, started at £ 582), it was ideal for the "athlete" who liked to drive fast and far, where conditions permitted. It was produced in the traditional Bentley / Rolls-Royce style, the engine was low-revving, management and most other controls quite heavy, and consumption Fuel fierce - but the fit, finish and quality of each component (especially the interior trim) were very high quality.
As ever, ever thought Rolls-Royce/Bentley needed to reveal the power of big six-cylinder engine, with overhead inlet / Side exhaust valve layout was only shared with another British brand of car - the Rover of the period. Who need that highlight the performance of their cars easily demonstrable, they let the figures speak for themselves acceleration.
In a career only three years, the R-Type Continental needed little improvement for the engine was a U powerful 4.5-liter
Lotus Elite (1958)
Right from the start, when he built his original special-bodied Austin Seven car testing, Colin Chapman showed signs of engineering genius. Setting up the Lotus, he sold his first car kits early 1950s, and soon built up rose racing sports cars. The first real road car Lotus, however, was the very advanced Lotus Elite.
First presentation in 1957, but not available until a year later, the new two-seater coupe Elite was irresistibly attractive. Although Lotus was still a small company, Chapman had built a car that has pushed the technology to the limit. In particular, he decided to make the Elite without separate chassis, using a fully fiberglass monocoque stressed that only include steel profiles for some local reinforcements.
Not only this amazing machine to be powered by a motor race-proven general-cam Coventry-Climax, and had four-wheel independent, but it has a poignant beauty, and was surprisingly very light. No, it seems, was never likely to confuse the Elite with any other car, for his quick, smooth lines and curves always had no rivals. Looking back in history, its only real drawback is that Door windows can be dismantled, but had to be removed to allow better ventilation.
In terms of engineering, well, "adding lightness" often adds costs too, and there was no doubt that the elite will always be car expensive to manufacture and sell. The fiberglass monocoque shell has proved difficult to do in number, major purchased items such as Coventry-Climax engine were very expensive, and the owners soon realized that a lot of maintenance and loving care was needed to keep the new sports car running.
Refinement was then not a word understood and the Lotus Elite is a little crudely equipped and finished first machine, the indoor environment is very noisy, because there was little attempt to isolate the transmission line and anchors suspension of the monocoque, which acted as a box full mature sound.
As in past years, the specification of the elite who has changed with the power of the engine gradually pushed to 100 hp (which has the top speed of over 120 km / h, quite amazing for a car 1.2 liter), ZF gear-box and adapted (for cars Series II) another type of rear suspension geometry specified.
Elite special, especially when prepared at the factory, were class cars a huge success in racing GT, even comparing with honor in major events such as the 24 Hours of Le Mans and Nurburgring Six Hour events. Years later Colin Chapman admitted that the elite has never made profits for Lotus, which may explain why he was happy he phase in 1962, before the arrival of spine chassised Elan. Nothing can affect the style, grace and inventiveness, which entered the car. A total of 988 elite does.
Committed owners generally forgiven for the Elite of the car defects, as here was a car that grown and manipulated as a step to compete with others. Light by contemporary standards, it was not only fast, but remarkably thrifty too.
